Electronics

As third-ranking sector in terms of export value (over 1 billion euros), the electronics industry in Bologna consists of 1,600 companies for a total of 16,000 employees. Such numbers illustrate the importance of the sector, which specialises in electric machines and devices, medical devices and high-precision tools.

Alongside a variety of companies producing high value-added components for various sectors of the mechanical and motor industries, Bologna is also home to leading companies in the manufacture of optical reading tools, RFID systems, tools for measuring and monitoring industrial processes and electro medical devices. The sector’s international calling has meant that Bolognese companies have always had a presence in many cutting-edge markets. This also explains why numerous multinational groups have chosen Bologna as the location for developing their products. The territory has been renowned internationally for its focus on research and innovation since the 19thcentury, owing to the studies and discoveries in wireless telegraphy by the Bolognese inventor Guglielmo Marconi, Nobel Prize winner for physics in 1909.

The Guglielmo Marconi research institute is home to the Bologna University electronic engineers who collaborated on the definition of the GSM standard and are currently involved in research projects on digital television and the impact of electromagnetic waves.
