Bologna is home to the world leaders in mechanical automation: where Italy has 27% of the global automated packaging machine market, second only to Germany, Bologna has earned itself the nickname Packaging Valley.
The figures show 214 businesses in the automated packaging machine industry (22% of the national total) with 6,200 employees (36% of the national total), of whom 70% are white collar workers dedicated to after-sales services. Approximately 80% of the output is exported around the world for a total value of 2 billion euros, a quota that meets 5% of worldwide demand. Bolognese companies are able to tailor products to a sophisticated degree of specification, to offer a capillary after-sales service of technical assistance, a highly qualified workforce and a constant drive to innovate. The production of systems and complete production-lines is aimed primarily at the agro-food, beverage, tobacco and cosmetic-pharmaceutical industries. The sector relies upon public and private research centres and human resource qualification and training centres. A driving force of particular importance for the sector as a whole are the University of Bologna’s Engineering Faculty and the Aldini Valeriani Technical and Industrial Institute.
