An emerging sector featuring highly dynamic small- to medium-sized businesses, the value added services sector in the province of Bologna consists of approximately 24,000 businesses achieving a total added value of 7.5 billion euros. The sector displays high rates of growth and development: the number of businesses has grown by 83% since 1991 for a 60% increase in the number of employees.
Bologna is particularly focused on financial and insurance services, global services, IT, economic and financial research and consultancy, the organisation of trade showsand advertising. Bologna also has the largest concentration of value-added services in Emilia-Romagna, and the province ranks fourth in Italy for service exports (480 million euros). Active companies operating in the sector are more than 3,800, for a total of 20,000 employees, a turnover to the tune of 5.6 billion euros(2006) and an added value of 1.6 billion. In 2006, 79 companies broke the 10 million euro turnover mark.
