BolognaCineca's supercomputer among the world's "Top 500"

The computer can be used to analyze geophysical phenomena and the properties of superconducting materials

Bologna Cineca’s new supercomputer, one of the 500 most powerful computer systems in the world, will enable scientists to analyze large scale geophysical phenomena, such as earthquakes and volcanic eruptions, and superconducting materials under varying chemical and physical conditions, as well as to study the properties of plasmas which can be used to develop devices for the construction of new electrical power plants.

Italy has climbed up the rankings thanks to this new supercomputer system, an IBM P575 Power 6 (known as ‘SP6’ at Cineca), which runs at 100 Teraflops (1 Teraflop = a trillion floating point operations per second). This system is able to meet the growing needs of a large community of computational scientists. As Marco Lanzarini, the Director of Cineca, says: “This innovative computer is essential in order to respond even more effectively to the needs of a wide range of extreme scientific research projects. This is the only way to face the challenges posed by socio-economic progress in a developed country, within the field of climate change, energy, new materials, nanotechnology, life sciences and environmental protection. Today, as forty years ago when the Cineca was founded, we are ready to support the scientific community on this exciting journey.”
