ECONOMIC NEWS FROM BOLOGNA

Rizzoli Orthopedic Institute opens 6 new research laboratories

67 researchers and €20 million funding

The six new laboratories are a sort of preview to Bologna’s Technopole, which will be built on the site of the former Tobacco Manufacturing Plant (Ex Manifattura Tabacchi) in the Exhibition district, although for the time being the labs will operate in specifically equipped and renovated areas within the Rizzoli Institute. The new laboratories are dedicated to various studies within the fields of bioinformatics and biotechnology which can be grouped under RIT, Research Innovation Technology. The laboratories will be able to count on a workforce of 67 new researchers and their research activity is funded for the next three years by a €20 million grant, half coming from Ior (Rizzoli Orthopedic Institute) funds and the other half from European Regional Development (Pos-Fesr) funds set aside for the regional Technopole network. At the Technopole site, the laboratories will occupy an area of 10,000 square metres. As for the research projects undertaken by the 6 laboratories, within the field of bioinformatics the BIC lab is dedicated to Computational Bioengineering (directed by M. Viceconti) while the CLIBI lab focuses on Clinical Bioinformatics (directed by L. Sangiorgi). Within the field of biotechnology, the NABI lab focuses on Nanobiotechnology (directed by M. Marcacci), the BITTA lab on Biocompatibility (directed by R. Giardino), the Ramses lab on Biomedical Research (directed by A. Facchini) and last but not least the Prometeo lab is devoted to Regenerative Medicine products (directed by P.M. Fornasari).
